Isla Mujeres
Isla Mujeres ( “Women Island” in english or just “Isla”), is a laid back island located 15 miles north to Cancun. Isla was named by spanish conqueror Francisco Hernandez, that when arrived there discovered multiple Mayan statues of women (which were used for religious ceremonies).
In a nutshell
Isla’s beautiful beaches, pristine waters and friendly inhabitants, made it a great spot for backpackers. If you seek for a quiet place, with not much of a nightlife, Isla Mujeres is a place you definitly would like to visit.
How to get there?
Ferries to Isla Mujeres depart from Puerto Juarez ( around 5 miles north of Cancun) every 30 minutes. The trip. Cost is around 4$/person. Beware of pickpockets when waiting for your ferry.
What to do?
There is no much to do in Isla Mujeres, except enjoying the beautiful beaches. We particullary liked Playa Norte (the North Beach).
Where to sleep?
There are plenty of cheap places you can sleep in. Here’s the one we stayed at:
Posada del Mar: Simple hotel located at the beach front. Prices are around 50$/night for a spacious room with a good fan. The caveat is that the hotel is a bit far away from the main beach.
